The official definition of a keshi
The Tahitian keshi is a cultured pearl without nuclei, of natural color, entirely formed of nacreous layers coming from the process of biomineralization of the pearl sac, formed from the epithelial cells of the graft, a piece of the mantle taken from a donor mollusc, originating from of French Polynesia. This graft is, after human intervention, either introduced alone into a pearl oyster carrying the species Pinctada margaritifera variety cumingii raised in French Polynesia, or introduced with a nucleus which will be expelled from the pearl pouch (gonad) or which will find itself isolated from the graft during movement inside the pearl pocket of the recipient pearl oyster.
