In recent years, moissanite has become very popular as a diamond alternative; moissanite looks like a diamond but costs much less. Composed of silica and carbon (C), moissanite is reproduced by humans in a laboratory. Why reproduced? This stone was initially discovered in 1893 in the Canyon Diablo meteorite, which fell approximately 50,000 years ago in Arizona, USA, and is the origin of the Meteor Crater.
On average, moissanite has more brilliance than a diamond thanks to its refractive index of 2.65 to 2.69, compared to 2.417 to 2.419 for a diamond. This means that moissanite reflects more light than a diamond, provided you compare two stones similar in color, cut, and size.
This brilliant stone has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale. It is second only to the diamond in terms of hardness, which means you can be certain your jewelry will last.
