In recent years, moissanite has become a very popular diamond alternative: moissanite looks like diamond but costs much less. Made from silicon and carbon (C), moissanite is now lab-created. Why lab-created? This stone was first discovered in 1893 in the Canyon Diablo meteorite, which fell about 50,000 years ago in Arizona, USA, creating the famous Meteor Crater.

Moissanite, on average, has more brilliance than diamond thanks to its refractive index of 2.65 to 2.69, compared to 2.417 to 2.419 for diamond. This means moissanite reflects more light than diamond, provided both stones are similar in color, cut, and size.

This brilliant stone has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale. It ranks just after diamond in terms of hardness, so you can be sure your jewelry will last.
