Over the past few years, moissanite has gained popularity as an alternative to diamond. Moissanite looks very similar to diamond but comes at a much more accessible price. Composed of silicon and carbon (C), moissanite is grown in laboratories today. Why grown? Because this gemstone was first discovered in 1893 in a meteorite that landed in Arizona over 50,000 years ago, at what is now known as Meteor Crater.

Moissanite actually has more brilliance than diamond, with a refractive index of 2.65–2.69 compared to 2.417–2.419 for diamonds. That means moissanite reflects more light—assuming both stones are comparable in color, cut, and size.

This brilliant gem ranks 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness, second only to diamond. That makes it a durable and lasting choice for fine jewelry.
